This talk offers an explanation of how the current American Presidential campaign reached the highly unusual result of a populist candidate winning a major party nomination despite that candidate's lack of ideological affinity with the party, lack of relationships with other party leaders and even his lack of political experience or knowledge.  The talk finds an explanation for this in 1) the fragmented communication environment resulting from the Internet in which highly partisan and false information are common; and 2) the breakdown of the Republican Party's coalition over issues of inequality and race. The talk finishes with a comparison of the strengths and weaknesses of the two candidates, noting that the Democrats have used Internet technologies to build a formidable campaign organization.
